Gil Freeman Death Obituary: In Remembrance Of Cherish Resident
Gil Freeman, a key figure in shaping a more progressive and environmentally aware Brunswick during the late 20th century, passed away last week at the age of 85.
His influence remains deeply embedded in the community. In the early 1980s, Freeman played a leading role in transforming a former landfill along Merri Creek into CERES, now a well-known urban farm and environmental park in Brunswick East, widely recognized for its focus on sustainability and community engagement.
Freeman’s dedication to environmental advocacy began even earlier. As chairman of the Brunswick Community Group in the mid-1970s, he helped rally residents to restore Merri Creek, turning it from a neglected area into a valued local resource. He was also passionate about education, co-founding the Sydney Road Community School in 1972 and serving as its first principal.
In the 1990s, he relocated to South Gippsland with his wife, Meredith, where they ran a successful organic farming venture, continuing his lifelong commitment to sustainable living. His contributions were honored with an Order of Australia Medal in 2023.
Gil Freeman passed away on March 25 after a brief illness. He is remembered as a visionary whose work continues to inspire a greener, more connected community.
